Parents meeting this sunday!
Hey guys we are meeting at 10am for support group. Just find the loud talking and you’ll find us (probably downstairs like always). This week we’ll be watching an excerpt from Duffy Robbins Understanding Your Teenager
You can read more about Duffy here
See you there!

When we originally met to discuss this idea with our focal group, one of the ideas that I really wanted to get across is that we dont want to focus on ‘fixing’ kids but rather ‘understanding’ kids and mending relationships through God’s power. This video/study by Duffy is a great way of moving us there!

Taking ownership…
You own the words that are in your head.
No one else does. No matter what you’ve heard or have been taught, you own them.
The problem is that whether you like it or not, once you say or type those words YOUR AUDIENCE OWNS THEM.
I don’t like this, I want to take back lots of things I’ve said but I can’t. Having said all that, please do your best to think before you press the <Enter> button. I know that some things might not seem like a big deal to you but they MIGHT be a big deal for everyone else who can hear, see or read them.

KENNYWOOD!
I could make this all fancy, or just let it speak for itself. Kennywood, August 16th meet at church at 10am. Purchase tickets before hand from me! $20.
You…
I know this is quite short and random but-
you’re time at college is about more than finding good deals on bud light.
GUMP Swim
I tried to find that scene in Forrest Gump where he jumps in the water…but I couldn’t find it. Truth be told I didnt look extremely hard, but I tried!
So July 12th we will be having a swim at the Gump’s house. If it rains or is horrible that day it will be the 13th.
Basically all you need to bring is yourself, a bathing suit, and maybe a friend and something to eat. The pool opens at 1pm and will be open until whatever adult is in charge (Deb Gregg) says you have to go home. So have fun! If you need directions to their house email Greg, or you can meet at the church at 1230 to ride over together
MSM, over and out. Go over to Facebook and find the HCC Motion Student Ministries page to find a link to the event.
Something for the parents
Few words incite such a dramatic reaction in the English language as the word TEENAGER. You probably cringed just then, thinking about your son or daughter and if they are doing their homework or digging an escape tunnel out of their room.
About this time of last November God really impressed on me that there needs to be some kind of support/forum group so that you as a parent can just feel like you aren’t doing this alone to let you know, despite anything you might be feeling, that you ARE a good parent. This idea veered quickly away from a ‘how to raise kids’ class. That idea was backed up by the book A Kingdom Called Desire by Rick McKinley. Basically he discusses that the question ‘how’ can sometimes leave us jaded and provide us with false answers. In my own words, each child is different. You know that. While what you want for your child may never change perhaps the methods might have to. So basically don’t expect to sit in a room for 6 weeks and then all of a sudden understand how to be a perfect parent or have an excellent child. So what can you expect?
The vision of the group in my head is quite simple. I see a group of parents sitting around in a circle, square, or maybe an octagon and just talking about their experiences as a parent. The discussions that are made in the group stay in the group. There is a feeling of confidence in the room because everyone knows that they aren’t being judged and they aren’t being looked at as screw-ups. Each week the discussion just flows naturally. Maybe there is a topic or question that starts the talk but you all (ya’ll) just have the chance to sit and talk and gain a better understanding of each other.
If we can do that with 16 year olds-who don’t go to school together, live in different communities, and really on the surface have no reason to be so open, then we can foster that same discussion with you. (p.s.-under the surface there is this living breathing Spirit which unifies those who seek out good questions and honesty).
I want you to understand that youth ministries truly survive when they try to serve the whole family. At the same time the front line for youth ministries in a church is parents. It’s kind of a big circle of blessings like that. I don’t know when this group is going to meet or where but the newsflash is that no time is good, we just need to make the time for it. So let’s just set a time to meet just so we can discuss when the best time to meet is. How about Sunday, June 26th at 9:00 am in room 402 (the room formerly known as the sanctuary). We’ll talk at that time about when we are going to meet. Thanks for reading and I hope you see that our ministries want you to know that you are loved, don’t have to be perfect and are awesome people!
Thanks for reading,
Greg
